In 2017, the share of energy from renewable energy sources in gross final energy consumption in the EU reached 17.5% compared to 17% in 2016 and 8.5% in 2004, the first year for which data are available, due to statistics Eurostat statistics. The EU target is 20% of the energy in gross final energy consumption to be from renewable sources by 2020 and by 2030 it should represent 32%.
In 2017, this share in Bulgaria was 18.7%, with the national target for 2020 being 16% (each Member State has different national targets). As early as 2014, the share of energy from renewable energy sources in gross final energy consumption in Bulgaria reached 18%.
